Balancing Law and Life: Reflections on Being a Working Mom

At Hampton Law Firm, we often talk about balance – between protecting our clients’ rights and giving them peace of mind, between hard work and heartfelt service. But balance doesn’t just apply to the practice of law – it applies to life. Especially for those of us who are both attorneys and mothers.

Being a working mom is one of the most challenging and rewarding roles I’ve ever experienced. It means giving your best to your clients, your family and your community – all while trying to save a little energy for yourself.

THE REALTY OF THE JUGGLE

There are days when I leave the office feeling proud of what I’ve accomplished for my clients – drafting wills that protect families, forming businesses that strengthen our community or helping someone navigate a complex legal issue.

And then I come home to an entirely different set of responsibilities: homework, dinner prep, and those sweet, fleeting moments before bedtime.

It’s a full life. And while it isn’t always perfectly balanced, its deeply meaningful.

GRACE OVER PERFECTION

As both a lawyer and a mother, I’ve learned that perfection isn’t the goal – presence is. Some days, I can give 100% to my clients, other days, my family needs me more. The balance shifts, and that’s okay.

THE POWER OF EXAMPLE

One of the greatest joys of being a working mom is knowing that my children are watching – not just what I do, but WHY I do it. They see the long hours, but they also see purpose. They see compassion. They see service.

When I advocate for families, draft an estate plan or help a client protect their small business, I hope my children see the value of hard work and the importance of helping others. That’s a legacy I’m proud to pass on.

BUILDING SUPPORT AND SETTING BOUNDARIES

Behind every working mom is a support system – whether is a spouse, family, friends or coworkers who understand the juggling act. I’m grateful for mine.

Setting health boundaries has also been essential. That means carving out time to truly disconnect from work and be present at home, and equally, being fully focused when serving my clients. Boundaries aren’t about limitation – they’re about sustainability.

REDEFINING SUCCESS

For me, success isn’t measured solely by the number of cases I handle or contracts I draft. It’s found in knowing that my work makes a difference for Louisiana families – and that I can come home each evening to my own family, proud of both what I do AND who I’m doing it for.

At the end of the day, being a working mom isn’t about choosing between career and family, its about living both with heart, intention and purpose.
