Better Be Tough

Every once in a while, a song comes along that isn't really about the lyrics. It's about the principle hiding underneath them.
Ella Langley's "Gotta Be Tough" caught my attention because, stripped of the country music and relationship drama, it's really about something much bigger.
Consequences.
Not the kind a judge hands down. Those are easy to identify. They come with statutes, courtrooms, and paperwork. I'm talking about the kind life hands down. The kind nobody can appeal.
Human beings have been making terrible decisions since the beginning of time. That isn't the interesting part. The interesting part is how genuinely shocked people seem when those decisions eventually demand payment.
Some people spend years trying to calculate exactly how much they can get away with. They lie to people who trust them. They manipulate people who love them. They use people who are loyal to them. They drain generosity without ever intending to return it. They borrow reputations they didn't earn. They spend someone else's emotional capital like they're carrying an unlimited balance.
Sometimes it's for money.
Sometimes it's for attention.
Sometimes it's because someone represents stability while they're busy chasing excitement somewhere else.
Whatever the reason, the calculation is almost always the same.
"I can keep taking because they'll never leave."
That may be the most expensive math problem a person will ever get wrong.
One of the stranger things I've noticed about life is that people often mistake kindness for weakness. They mistake patience for ignorance. They assume that because someone isn't screaming, making a scene, or exposing them publicly, that person simply doesn't know.
Most of the time...
They knew long before you thought they did.
They were simply deciding whether what they loved was worth fighting for.
There is an arrogance that develops when someone starts believing they're smarter than the person they're using. They convince themselves they're in control because they're getting away with it today. They start believing they've beaten the system.
Until one day they discover they weren't beating the system at all.
They were spending something they didn't own.
What fascinates me most isn't the cheating. It isn't the lying. It isn't even the manipulation.
It's the unbelievable confidence some people have when they decide to use someone who is objectively bringing more to their life than they are.
More loyalty.
More character.
More generosity.
More patience.
Sometimes more money.
Sometimes more opportunity.
Sometimes simply more peace.
Instead of protecting something valuable, they start treating it like a resource to be consumed. As though loyal people are replaceable. As though integrity grows on trees. As though someone who genuinely wants to see you succeed will always be standing exactly where you left them after you've finished taking everything you wanted.
Life has a funny way of correcting that assumption.
Because eventually, the person being used gets tired.
Not because they're weak.
Because they're done.
And that's the moment the people doing the taking never seem to see coming.
They've spent so much time calculating what they can get away with that they never stop to calculate what it will cost when the bill finally comes due.
Here's the thing about consequences.
You don't get to negotiate them.
You don't get to decide how someone else heals.
You don't get to decide when enough is enough.
You don't get to decide whether the truth comes out.
You don't get to decide whether the bridge you burned can somehow be rebuilt just because you've decided you need it again.
That's not how life works.
If you're going to play games with loyal people... if you're going to use someone because they have more money, more stability, more character, more patience, or simply because they love you enough to keep giving... you'd better be prepared for the day they stop.
Because when that happens, the consequence isn't always loud.
Sometimes it's a closed door.
Sometimes it's an empty chair.
Sometimes it's a reputation you'll never fully repair.
Sometimes it's realizing that the person you underestimated was the best thing that ever happened to you.
By then, there isn't a judge in the world who can undo your decision.
There isn't a lawyer who can negotiate your way back into someone's trust.
There isn't enough money to buy back years you've already thrown away.
Consequences don't negotiate.
They don't care that you didn't mean to lose everything.
They don't care that you thought nobody would ever find out.
And they sure as hell don't care that you suddenly experience memory loss when the bill comes due.
So maybe Ella Langley had it right.
If you're going to gamble with other people's loyalty, trust, generosity, and hearts...
If you're going to convince yourself that good people will always be there after you've taken everything you wanted...
If you're going to be that dumb...
You really do gotta be tough.
