NOTE 001: BEFORE WE BEGIN
A collection of thoughts that didn't make it to the blog.
If you've spent any time reading my website, you already know I enjoy writing. Most of what you'll find here is intentional. It has a purpose. It's researched, organized, edited, and usually answers a legal question or explores a topic that I think is worth discussing. Those are blog articles.
This isn't that.
Over the years, I've discovered that some of the most interesting parts of my life never become blog articles because they aren't really meant to. They're too short, too personal, too funny, too frustrating, or simply too random to justify fifteen hundred words and a formal conclusion. They start as a sentence scribbled on a yellow legal pad after court, a thought typed into my phone while sitting in a parking lot, something a client says that stays with me long after they've left the office, or an observation that refuses to let go of me for reasons I can't quite explain.
Eventually I realized I had accumulated an entire collection of these moments. They weren't unfinished ideas. They weren't rough drafts waiting to become something bigger. They were complete exactly as they were. They simply didn't belong in the blog.
So I stopped trying to force them there.
From Judith's Desk is my editorial column. It's where the thoughts that don't fit anywhere else finally get a home.
Some notes will come from the courtroom. Others will come from my office, my family, my children, my friendships, my failures, my victories, or the occasional train wreck that somehow finds its way into my life despite my best efforts. Some will make you laugh. Some may irritate you. A few will probably make you uncomfortable. Every now and then one might even make you stop and think for a while.
Not every note will have a lesson.
Not every story will have a perfect ending.
Not every observation will be wrapped in a neat little bow so everyone walks away feeling warm and inspired.
Life certainly hasn't done that for me, so I don't intend to pretend otherwise here.
These notes aren't intended to convince you that I'm right. They're simply an invitation to pull up a chair for a few minutes and read whatever happened to land on my desk that day.
If something resonates with you, I'd love to hear about it. If you disagree with me, that's perfectly fine too. Some of my favorite conversations have started with someone who saw the world differently than I did. Every note has room for discussion, and I hope you'll join it.
The only promise I can make is this: every note will be honest.
Sometimes honesty is funny.
Sometimes it's uncomfortable.
Sometimes it's both.
