Story time with Nan
The Time She Married One of Arkansas's Most Wanted
Last week I got lost in Arkansas.
Nan found this absolutely hilarious.
Not because she's mean (although reasonable people may disagree), but because, in her opinion, I got off easy.
You see, years ago Nan went to Arkansas and accidentally married one of Arkansas's most wanted fugitives.
No, that's not clickbait.
No, I'm not exaggerating.
And unfortunately for Nan, there are witnesses.
I've heard this story dozens of times over the years, and every single time I hear it, I find another detail that makes me stop and ask, "Wait...what?"
It has everything.
A Facebook friend request.
Peach orchards.
A campground.
An undisclosed wife.
A stolen truck.
An axe.
A Bible.
Several armed deputies.
And one very confused newlywed trying to figure out how her honeymoon had suddenly become evidence.
The short video on Facebook is just the introduction.
The full conversation is below.
After that, I've included Nan's own written account of what happened, in her own voice, because stories like this deserve to be preserved exactly as they're told.
Sometimes the best legal education doesn't come from a courtroom.
Sometimes it comes from surviving life long enough to laugh about it.

Judith's Note
I endorse this as Nan's true account of what she personally experienced and what she recalls being told by law enforcement at the time. Certain names and identifying details have been omitted, and the dialogue has been lightly edited for clarity without changing the substance of her story.
I've practiced law for years, but one of the greatest privileges of building Hampton Law Firm has been working beside people who have lived extraordinary lives before they ever walked through my office door.
This is one of those stories.
Some legal lessons come from books.
Some come from experience.
And some begin with a Facebook friend request and end with the sentence:
"Ma'am... you can't get your luggage. The truck is stolen."

Ok. I am going to have to hear the rest of Nan's story. We maybe kindred spirits. 💞
