A collection of thoughts that didn't make it to the blog.

People have a tendency to think that relationships end because of one spectacular event. They imagine a screaming match, a dramatic betrayal, or one moment so obvious that everyone involved immediately knows it's over.

I've learned it usually isn't that simple.

Sometimes the relationship ends years before either person is willing to admit it. Sometimes the evidence isn't hidden in the big moments. Sometimes it's buried inside something so ordinary that you don't even recognize it until long after it's happened.

Mine came on Christmas.

We were together. We were supposed to be building a future. We were spending Christmas with my family, opening presents, eating too much, laughing, taking pictures, and doing everything families are supposed to do.

At some point that day, he picked up his phone.

Not to text me.

Not to thank my parents for opening their home.

Not to tell someone he loved his family.

He texted another woman.

"Merry Christmas, you’re the first person I’ve told today”

Not because she happened to be next on his contact list.

Because she was on his mind.

I didn't know it then.

I wouldn't learn about that message until much later.

Funny how a single sentence can completely change the way you remember an entire day.

For years, Christmas existed in my memory as Christmas.

Then one text message reached backward through time and rewrote the whole thing.

The presents looked different.

The photographs looked different.

Even the smiles looked different.

Nothing in the pictures had changed.

Only what I knew.

That's the strange thing about betrayal.

It doesn't just damage your future.

Sometimes it quietly steals pieces of your past.

I've often wondered how many ordinary days become extraordinary only because we eventually learn what was happening while we were busy believing everything was fine.

Christmas still comes every year.

It just reminds me that sometimes the loudest thing in a relationship is a message you never knew existed.
